Live tweeting at a conference is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the conference, and to network with other delegates. I’ve met so many wonderful people by live tweeting at conferences! Live tweeting is s fabulous way to discuss the ideas presented at the conference.
Here are some of my tips for successful live tweeting:
1. Tweet as much or as little as you like
At first, live tweeting can be overwhelming, especially if there are people who seem to be able to tweet every single thing that the presenter says! There are no rules for how much or how little you should tweet – its fine to tweet however much or little you are comfortable with
2. Will you report on the content, join the discussion or both?
There are plenty of ways you can engage in live tweeting during a presentation. Some people take on a reporter role, reporting all the main points of the presentation, while others join in the ‘backchannel’ conversation behind the scenes – discussing the key points during or after the presentation. There is no right or wrong, just do what feels easiest for you.
3. Respect the presenter
If you know the presenters twitter handle, use it in your live tweets, especially when directly quoting them. This measn that can come back and join the conversation after their presentation. If you don’t know their twitter name, you can reference them using their surname. It’s a great idea to follow the presenter on twitter ahead of time!
4. Engage in discussion
The thing I enjoy most about conferences (after the conference dinner!) is being able to discuss new ideas. Twitter is perfect for this, and you can discuss new ideas not only with the delegates at the conference, but with people from all around the world following the conference via its #tag. Even better, you can keep on talking long after the conference ends!
